Ellen Ochoa was a grad student in Stanford’s electrical engineering program when she watched NASA's first space shuttle launch in 1981. She went on to fly four space shuttle missions from 1993 to 2002, and became the first Hispanic woman in space.
Ochoa wasn't selected the first time she applied to be an astronaut. But she took a different job at NASA, earned her private pilot’s license, and was successful the next time. As an astronaut, she conducted experiments in space, studying the Earth’s ozone layer, and went to the International Space Station.
In 2013, she became director of NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.
