Bindu Bhandari has a fresh perspective on being an explorer in her own country. Part of the @climatediaspora team, she journeys through the Himalayas, her native land, and shares stories of mountain communities adapting to climate change, urbanization, and globalization. One particular story stands out - that of nomadic yak herder, Nima Bhotey (pictured left). Nima has been traversing some of the planet’s highest mountain passes with her herd since she was just seven years old.

“Yak herding has its perks of blending in with nature,” says Bhotey, who has been yak herding for 34 years. “But I suggest my children not follow [in] my footsteps, as the world is changing beyond what I can imagine.”

As the planet warms and the world globalizes, the pull of the city grows stronger. Nima decided that her teenage daughter will not walk the same path: her daughter recently migrated to Kathmandu for educational opportunities and an urban future.

The @climatediaspora team are a trio of explorers that were supported by a storytelling grant from the National Geographic Society in 2019, and kept toasty in gear through our Macpac Fund for Good. Find out more about their expedition to Nepal on our blog, The Log Book.
