Photos and video by Pete McBride @pedromcbride / Canary in the Coal Mine: In early September it snowed where I live in Colorado. Temperatures plummeted quickly, while songbirds panicked and kept flying into windows seeking warmth…or something. Two days prior, the thermostat reached 100°F, and smoke from the wildlife fires raging across the West made the sky a dusty, dark gray. Climate is showing serious signs of changing—like nothing I’ve seen in my life spent in the Rockies. Extreme environmental change affects all of us, blue and red states, black and white, brown and yellow, in many cases disproportionately—no one is above Mother Nature. The U.S. is divided, but we need to find some common ground for this shared planet and the land that sustains us, and stay engaged for our world, even if regulations to protect us are eroding. Voting is one step. Our collective actions do make a difference, and democracy is all about those who show up.
