Photo by @michaelchristopherbrown / Two women bond while enjoying their coffee in a Romany village located in Bulgaria's Rose Valley. The valley, where roses have been cultivated for centuries, produces nearly half of the world’s rose oil. The Romany doing the bulk of the work in gathering the petals and delivering them to the distilleries. The picking season lasts from May to June, dotted by festivals celebrating of the flower. The country's Romany represent Europe’s highest concentration of Romanies, who make up roughly 4% of the Bulgarian population. Originally from northern India, they likely settled en masse in Bulgaria between the 13th and 14th centuries. The Romany within Bulgaria are not unified in culture and lifestyle, as there are both Bulgarian and Turkish communities, with the former mostly Christian and the latter largely Muslim.
