To prepare for their roles on #TheCrown as Prince Charles and Princess Diana, both Josh O'Connor and Emma Corrin dove head-first into their own methods of research. For O'Connor, it was reading about arranged marriages and the psychology of marital breakdowns; for Corrin, it was learning about Diana's traumatic childhood, installing a photo of Diana with Prince Philip as her computer backdrop, and speaking with Diana's private secretary.
Series creator Peter Morgan wove the couple's complicated relationship into his scripts for the show: "I don't think she ever stopped loving Charles," he tells V.F. "I think she had grown to realize that marriage was impossible... I think she may have loved other people towards the end of it, but I think her number one choice would have been to make that marriage work."
