Known to grow on gravelly limestone hilltops in open pinyon-juniper woodland in New Mexico, the rare Kuenzler hedgehog cactus was struggling back in 1979 when it was listed under the Endangered Species Act. In 1979, only two populations totaling 200 plants were known. With hard work from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and many partners, management improved, threats were reduced, and additional cactus and locations were identified. The future was definitely less prickly. Surveyors through 2015 have found at least 4,330 plants at dozens of locations, and so it was downlisted to threatened under the Trump Administration in 2018.
