This is the Akan drum – the earliest African-American object in the Museum.

It was made over 300 years ago in the Akan region of Ghana, West Africa.

It’s thought the drum travelled across the Atlantic aboard a slave ship, but it’s not known for sure. Drums were played during these journeys and captives were forced to dance for exercise in order to keep them healthier – amid the horrendous conditions – for labour on slave plantations.

In North America, drums were confiscated and banned as part of the forced suppression of enslaved Africans and their culture. Around 1730, the drum was acquired by a Reverend Clerk in Virginia – then a British colony and now a state in the USA – and it then passed into the collection of Sir Hans Sloane, and then to the British Museum.

Director Hartwig Fischer and former Deputy Chair of the Museum Trustees Bonnie Greer discuss its legacy and the lives of the people who made and played it – link in bio.

This evening, join Bonnie Greer and acclaimed author and historian Professor Olivette Otele in a free online event discussing the forgotten history of African European heritage. Tune in from 17.30 BST – find out more and book at britishmuseum.org/events
