The Trump Administration has been pushing to finalize a settlement with Purdue Pharma before Election Day, which it would likely present as a major victory against Big Pharma. In truth, it would mark a stunning turn in the decades-long saga of trying to hold the company responsible for its role in the opioid crisis. The Sackler Family has offered to settle the nearly 3,000 claims against Purdue for a guaranteed payment of $3 billion, along with other inducements, which it will only supply if the family is released from future liability. The sum is a minuscule amount compared to the estimated cost of the opioid crisis—over $2 trillion—and the fortune the Sacklers are likely to retain.
