Photo by @amivitale / Rickshaw pullers take children to school and people to work around Ripon Street in central Kolkata. This congested city is the only one in India where rickshaws are still being pulled by hand. In 1996 the Government of West Bengal announced that it intended to ban the rickshaws to relieve traffic congestion, but it was never fully enforced. In 2007 the government again pushed to have the ban enforced, and a case decided in the Supreme Court ultimately allowed the hand-pulled rickshaws to remain. They still exist to this day.
