Eddie Van Halen, the innovative guitarist behind the band Van Halen, has died of throat cancer at the age of 65. His son, Wolfgang, confirmed the news on Wednesday afternoon. “I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning,” he wrote. “He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift.” Throughout his time leading the band, Van Halen was known for his virtuosity on the electric guitar, blending classical and rock techniques, and inventing wholly new approaches to solos. The band, which released a string of hit albums in the late 1970s and 80s, was one of the first hard rock bands to reach mainstream success and have sold more than 50 million albums.
