Photo by @nicholesobecki / Portrait of Alaa Salah, an engineering student and activist who became the face of the revolution in Sudan after a photograph of her standing atop a car in a white toub, leading a crowd of protesters in a chant, went viral. For her role in fueling the revolution that ousted President Omar al-Bashir from 30 years of authoritarian rule, Alaa became known as a “Kandake,” or an ancient Nubian queen. She also came to symbolize the integral role women played on the front lines of the pro-democracy protests, where they often outnumbered men. #women #sudan #history #identity
