Photos by @francescolastrucci / Daily life in Jodhpur’s Blue City, Rajasthan, India. The blue color, ranging from light blue to intense indigo, once served to identify the homes of the Brahmins, the members of the priestly caste and the highest status in India. Though locals, especially when opposing the Brahmin-related theory, will come up with many other explanations. There is a legend that says the color is related to the myth of Lord Shiva’s blue skin. Some say that the blue paint, a mixture of copper sulphate and limestone, keeps termites away from the houses, while others say it keeps the houses cool in the harsh summer months.
Whatever the truth is, wandering in the labyrinthine alleys of the walled town is an experience for the senses, from the blue cubic houses piled up along the narrow lanes to the shops, shrines, and small temples and up to the spice and craft bazaar.
