CRY FREEDOM! by @shanti_parmanand

From my paternal grandparents, to my father then my mother, family businesses in Hong Kong rely on the International eye. As political change begins, the future of the city is in question. By Shanti Parmanand.

My immigrant grandparents established their textiles and tailoring shops in the then British territory Hong Kong, it was the Second World War that aided their sales. As American troops saw the city as an affordable place to purchase suits and fabrics – my family, who at the time owned seven textile shops named ‘Royal India Tailors’ across the city were their main suppliers. By the ‘70s, business plummeted and all shops closed down. Soon enough, my father started up his own tailoring company – Beaumonde, which in French, means ‘fine world’, a historic word that has applied to Fashion in Europe for hundreds of years.

Only returning to Hong Kong twice a year, I can’t help but notice the changes that are now transforming the city. Since the start of the year, local news channels include a segment in Mandarin (the native language of mainland China), whereas before where it was in Cantonese and English. It started last year in March with the Extradition Bill proposing the idea that arrest was possible without any formal negotiations. Meaning, if an individual did something that was legal in Hong Kong but illegal in China – they would be arrested. Then came a wave of protests about the bill concerning the city’s freedom, with teargas used as a weapon to eliminate anyone on the streets. Now, the National Security Law (essentially handing us over to China) is active.

Further fueling this disease is Disney’s live-action film remake of Mulan. For so long, the film empowered Chinese heritage and now it is representing a pro-Beijing ideology. Last August, Liu Yifei, the star of Mulan said on Chinese social media “I also support the Hong Kong police. You can beat me up now.” Donnie Yen, who plays Commander Tung in Mulan, also posted on July 1st, “today is the celebration day for Hong Kong's return to motherland, China.”
