I’ve always had a complicated relationship with skating. On one end, my hard work and ability gave me the life I have today, and I’m really thankful. On the other, I left the sport reeling from years of negativity, body image issues, and not enough attention or support for my own personal mental health. It sometimes felt like everyone had a say in what happened to me, except for me. I was exhausted. So it made me resent the sport, it didn’t feel like it belonged to me, like it was mine. I stopped because I didn’t want to be a part of something that I couldn’t take control of myself. Years later, I’m realizing how much power there is in being back on the ice. To skate for no other reason than to skate because I want to. I’ve learned how to enjoy a spread eagle, to love a nice deep edge. Simplicity makes me happy. There isn’t much of a point to this other than to just share where I am on the journey. No one ever talks about this stuff and I think it’s important 🤷🏼‍♀️ 📸: Janet Liu
