"It worked for a while," says Chomo. Snow leopards killed four goats over two weeks at this farm. The farmer managed to retrieve the goats' heads, which he plans to use to request compensation from the local forest and wildlife department. Compensation programs are put in place by the government and NGOs in many of these areas in Indian Himalaya, but they cover only the economic loss. This livestock also has emotional and cultural value in the community, and hence any loss is hard to compensate entirely. Also, it's challenging for very remote villages to get benefits from these programs due to logistical limitations. A part of the work of @snowleopardtrust is to help facilitate compensation by ensuring people know what the required process is and who to contact.
