NASA spacecraft study the Sun up close — but taking a step back can also provide new insight.

In new research, scientists looked at solar data in low resolution, simulating views of stars trillions of miles away. This zoomed-out view can help us understand stellar activity and the conditions for life on planets orbiting other stars.

This video shows the light curves created by the scientists over the original high-resolution images of sunspots from our Solar Dynamics Observatory and the JAXA/NASA Hinode solar observatory. They studied different layers of the Sun — from the visible surface to the outer atmosphere — using 14 different wavelengths, including the six shown here.
