It depicts Murakami’s alter ego, Mr. DOB, surfing a Hokusai-inspired wave. This fierce, but cute, Mr. DOB anticipates the artist’s foray into kawaii and the evolution of his Superflat movement, when fine art and pop culture references meld on a single plane.
