Facebook’s head of global affairs wrote in a recent blog post that the company takes a “zero tolerance approach” to hate speech, but that “rooting out the hate is like looking for a needle in a haystack.” A more honest metaphor would posit a powerful set of magnets at the center of the haystack: Facebook’s algorithms, which attract and elevate whatever content is most highly charged. Facebook’s incentive is to keep people on the platform, including strongmen and their most avid followers, whose incendiary views tend to generate a disproportionate amount of engagement. At the link in our bio, Andrew Marantz writes about Facebook's moderation practices, which seem to be less concerned with managing the problem of dangerous content than with managing the public’s perception of the problem.
