Photo by @nicholesobecki / Model Suzan Charles has her makeup and hair done by fashion stylist Maab Siddig and makeup artist Waad Al Fatih ahead of a photoshoot at Khartoum’s edgy Graphious Studio. The shoot was inspired by Sudan’s rich, ancient history, with Suzan portrayed, according to Maab, as “a symbol of justice and power, like the Kandakes of olden times.” The white thoub cloth worn by Suzan has become a symbol of the recent revolution that overthrew the repressive regime of President Omar al-Bashir, and is also a reference to ancient Nubian queens, connecting their power to the power of the women at the forefront of this latest chapter in Sudan’s history. “The revolution changed me personally, beyond just the politics,” Maab told me. “It decided our future, but it also made us look to the past with a different perspective.” #sudan #history #identity
