Over the last four years, many have taken solace in The West Wing's counterfactual fantasy of the White House. Now, fourteen years after it ended, the high-stakes election of 2020 has finally spurred creator Aaron Sorkin to bring the show back—in the form of a live theatrical performance. A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote, with proceeds going to Michelle Obama’s nonpartisan nonprofit, premieres on Thursday on HBO Max, and reenacts an episode that celebrates the importance of voting. The special involves much of the original cast—including Dulé Hill and Janel Moloney, who spoke with V.F. about what the show means in the era of #MeToo, BLM, and Trump. “Like everyone, I’ve been really struggling and turned upside down by the world," says Moloney, who also imagines might be the show's true last act: “I think it’s a 99.9% chance that this is it—that we’re never going to be acting as a group together again."
