I am truly honored and happy to have been a part of a few different @billboard awards tonight… Song of the year at radio, and since I am the honorary bonus Jonas- so incredibly proud and happy for them , The hardest working group I know and they deserve everything that has come. Group of the year fam❤️. While I’m pleased (& honestly plain lucky) Sucker was a Billboard #1....I’d trade 5 of those for a radio #1....and here’s why. For anyone that’s trying to make a living as a song writer... until the streaming revenue profit share is adjusted to treat the SONG ITSELF as valuable as the “recorded version” or master... radio is everything to people like me and any writers that read this. That’s right- billions of streams are impressive numbers for songs, but because of the way things shake out, good old fashion radio is 80-90% of how writers get paid. I love Spotify, Apple, Pandora, Amazon, Google etc... but a “streaming hit” doesn’t pay a songwriters rent let alone life. Meanwhile “working a song at radio” is a dying art within major labels. Radio singles often are left to chance, tik tok, streaming data or fleeting cultural zeitgeist. SO- God bless the @republicrecords team for pushing this song and all my songs as hard as they do at radio and making this a success for all parties involved in this single and album. U truly created a virtuous win/win for the label and the creators. The songwriters thank you, the producers thank you, and I thank you. And until streaming revenue deals are adjusted to reflect the reality of the VALUE of creating art out of thin air… I will continue to value a radio chart position above and beyond any other chart on earth, as will my co writers, my family, & my business manager.
