Painted in 1918, "Petit Ecolier en blouse noire" is a rare early masterpiece by Léonard Foujita. During the summer of that year, the Japanese–French painter travelled to the South of France, staying in a village with Modigliani, Soutine and Zborowski. The luminescent, almost golden, background, evokes both the light of the south as well as traditional icons.
