This is an amazing scientific and engineering achievement. The 6 seconds of contact were the climax of a two-year journey to reach the asteroid 322 million km from earth. When the sample arrives back in 3 years’ time, it will give us a deeper understanding of how the solar system formed, and perhaps how life on Earth started. OSIRIS-REx is an acronym: Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith Explorer. It’s a mouthful, but amusing that this cutting-edge manifestation of humanity’s pursuit of scientific knowledge should be named after an ancient Egyptian god. The OSIRIS-REx mission team comprises members from diverse backgrounds and viewpoints, working together with a common goal. Whether targeting a probe at a far away asteroid, or curing a tiny virus among us, people must work together, to solve the issues that affect us all.
