A decade ago, Don Shipley began posting YouTube videos debunking false Navy SEAL claims. Shipley, who spent more than 20 years in the Navy, is one of the most prominent investigators of military imposters. When catching liars over the phone became routine, he and his wife sometimes staked out phonies’ houses and confronted them on camera. Since Shipley started his channel, confrontations between service members and potential imposters have become wildly popular on YouTube. He partly blames himself for seeding these confrontations. “I came out swinging so hard at these guys on the Internet that I brought on flocks of these junior G-men who have nothing to do but patrol Walmart and accost people,” he said.
