The project on display is titled “Men of trouble waters”. The fishermen who serve the depleted fleet of Mazara del Vallo in Sicily have plenty of troubles of their own; catches fluctuate wildly, competition with other fleets is fierce, and should they stray too close to the coast of Libya they can expect to be welcomed with gunfire. Whilst going about their undeniably tough daily business, however, they often encounter others facing an even harder predicament: migrants who are trying to make the perilous crossing from Africa to Europe. The fishermen of Mazara have come to the rescue, sometimes against the restriction from their own Navy and government. Their 80-strong, 30-metre motor trawlers fleet is now just a third of its former size, having shrunk because of the economic crisis, the EU ship-scrapping programme and competition from lawless North-African countries. Nonetheless, in the last 20 years their bravery saved thousands of migrants in the so-called Mammellone sea area. About the artist - Roselena Ramistella is a photographer from Sicily, with a background in Political Science from the University of Catania. Social issues, portraiture and interaction between nature and humanity are the base of her photographic narratives. Roselena investigates her subjects with a personal narrative and artistic style. She has participated in several international exhibitions and has received multiple awards such as the Sony World Photography Awards 2018.
