Dr Birute Galdikas .. "Orangutans are usually quadrepeds on the ground. However, due to their brachiator’s anatomy, they are predisposed to be bipedal. Although wild orangutans walking bipedally is very rare, I have seen wild orangutans standing bipedally on the forest floor without any support. At OFI’s Care Centre in Central Borneo we release wild born ex-captive orangutans like young female Wendy into the “Teaching Forest” which is approximately 100 hectares (250 acres) of relic primary peat swamp forest so ex-captives can learn to tree nest and forage on fruits and flowers of tree species the same as they will encounter in the wild. Wendy is somewhat unique as she likes occasionally to walk bipedally, especially if a camera is present. Let us hope that once Wendy is ready to go back to the wild, there still will be some wild left!" _____________________________________
