TW / homophobia, graphic violence.
It’s been 22 years since the murder of Matthew Shepherd—a 21 year-old gay student who, in 1998, was lured by two straight men into rural Wyoming and subsequently beaten and tortured to death, his body left tied to a fence post—yet, despite the crime’s national attention, Wyoming remains one of just three U.S. states to have not passed a comprehensive hate crime law to protect ANY marginalized group.
As the country approaches arguably the most divisive election since the Civil War, let Matthew Shepherd’s memory serve as a reminder of our government’s continued failing of its vulnerable populations.
While celebrating progress, may we continue to demand change in its totality, for every American.
