It starts with the representation of mythical and legendary creatures. Gods, demigods and other magical beings endowed with unpredictable, not infrequently disturbing, unpleasant, grotesque features, imagined by the ancient world from East to West and represented in Greek and then Roman art. Characters with the appearance of an animal that seduce, kidnap and impregnate divine sleeping maidens. And then there are the emblematic figures such as Pan, Minotaur, Medusa, who, half human and half animal, whether bull or bird, goat or horse, lions or bear, interact with humans in bas-reliefs, sculptures and frescoes, contrasting with beautiful physiques that are sinuous or muscular, male or female, divine or terrestrial. Not to mention the fascination with monstrosities, anomalies, nightmares and hallucinations, fantastic creatures of extraordinary appearance, inspiring marvelous creations and inventions which, from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance and Mannerism, and then from Symbolism to Surrealism and Magic Realism, or, more generally, from modern to contemporary, contributing over the centuries to transforming beauty into a complex, controversial, multi-faceted attribute, rich in meanings that range from the norm to its infinite possible transgressions.
