Having such intense volcanic activity allowed Iceland to expand its reliance on geothermal power for heating and energy production, and today almost all of Iceland's electricity is produced from renewable sources.

Iceland’s attention toward geothermal energy and environmental care is included in my latest story for National Geographic magazine, “The End of Trash.” The “circular economy” is surfacing as a promising solution to many of our issues regarding waste, pollution, and emissions. By designing waste out of the production system, circularity aims to keep resources and materials in use while regenerating natural systems. Scientists say we only have a few years to halt and reverse our overconsumption, our emissions, and our wasteful attitude in order to save our changing climate, natural habitats, and, ultimately, ourselves. While the circular economy is a promising solution, it is only one of the tools that may help to turn this situation around. The truth is, there isn't one single solution. But each one of us can make a big difference by thinking more consciously about the effects our actions have on the planet and staying informed about the environment.

Please follow me @lucalocatelliphoto to learn about the promising new solutions to the pressing issues facing our planet and how we can make a difference. #environment #circulareconomy #geothermal #iceland #lucalocatelliphoto
