Honoring Black Veterans #VeteransDay

Today is Veterans Day in the United States of America. Follow @blackveteransproject and watch my interview with Richard Brookshire (@crtv_drctr) 🖤 As we work to make sure that there are no more wars to create veterans, let’s take care of the veterans among us. No one is disposable. ⁣

Throughout US history, Black Americans have been treated as second-class citizens and this extends to military service. Did you know that the Civil Rights Act or 1964 does not apply to the military? Did you know that Black Americans have served in every war in which the USA was involved? ⁣

As you see #VeteransDay tributes take note of how underrepresented Black veterans are in the conversation. I was able to interview Richard Brookshire (@crtv_drctr) executive director and founder of @blackveteransproject (BVP).⁣

BVP a nationally recognized veteran organization advancing research, litigation and advocacy to address systemic racial inequities and injustice across the military and veteran communities. In the past year BVP has submitted briefs to the Supreme Court in support of Black Veterans seeking redress for discrimination, worked with Yale Law School’s Clinic to submit FOIA’s requests around disability benefits and collaborated with Congressional leaders to push forth agendas that center the welfare of the Black veteran community — to include a re-examination of the exclusion of members of the military from protections afforded under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.⁣
