When Sarah Miller’s dog Merle started to slow down, one of her friends encouraged her to get a “bridge dog”—a dog that would be around after Merle died. At first, Miller didn’t go for it. “It would be an insult to Merle and to our relationship,” she wrote. Then she met a shelter dog named Ruthie, who “looked like a corgi-heeler mix, or as if a pig had mated with an egg bagel.” Ruthie came home with her and quickly joined the family. “As our love grew, Merle continued to decline.” At the link in our bio, Miller writes about her attempt to stave off the grief of losing one dog by getting another.
