Photo by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz / The venerable homes of the old walled city of Ghadames, Libya, honeycomb a pre-Saharan oasis on the desert’s edge. The thick albescent walls reflect the sunlight and keep the interiors of these buildings cool in all but the hottest summer months. The flat roofs are designed as warm weather sleeping areas and are connected to one another by pathways, just as a network of ground-level alleys provides covered walkways protected from the sun. The city, which has no electricity or plumbing, was abandoned in the early 1980s when the government built new housing for the residents. Many continue to maintain their ancestral homes, however, and the city has become a popular tourist destination, a paradigm of sustainable architecture from which the world has much to learn.
