Photo by @babaktafreshi / On a perfectly clear and calm moonlit night over Mono Lake in California, this time-exposure image reveals the Earth's rotation in about one hour. The Earth's rotation turns the sky above the fixed camera, creating star trails around the north celestial pole, marked by the North Star, Polaris. The scattered image of the stars on the water shows more colors, with colder old orange-red stars and hotter young blue giants. Mono Lake is famous for its stunning exposed tufa towers of limestone formed by the precipitation of carbonate minerals in water.
