The intense tones and rapid, spontaneous brushwork in "Autumn" demonstrate Hugh Henry Breckenridge’s commitment to the aesthetic principles of Modernism. The painting dates to the early 1930s, when the artist shifted his style from a subdued Impressionism to a more aggressive abstraction of form and color. Breckenridge taught at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia for forty-three years. His pupils included Arthur B. Carles, Charles Demuth, and Henry Lyman Saÿen.
