Happy weekend 🎨 Today's focus is on pastel works, a request we had from a follower when we asked what you wanted to see more of on the feeds. Wonderfully immediate and super smudgy, pastels let you apply pigment straight onto a surface without a brush. Paula Rego describes working in pastels as 'painting with your fingers’. Here are nine pastel works from our collection. Which is your favourite?
Edgar Degas, Miss Lala at the Cirque Fernando 1879
Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Sophie Brzeska 1913
Laura Anning Bell, Miss Annie Horniman c.1910
Eileen Agar, Abstract drawing of a fruit bowl, Tate Archive
Claudette Johnson, Figure in raw umber 2018
@PaulaRegoStudio, War 2003
Aubrey Williams, Sketch of tulips in a flowerpot [1956], Tate Archive
Anthony Eyton, The Tank, Bankside Power Station 1995
Emile Schuffenecker, Spring-like Morning c.1896
