Ancient #Hawaiians followed a complex system of land division. Shaped by #island geography, an "ahupua`a" is a wedge-shaped area of land running from the uplands to the sea, following the watershed's natural boundaries. Each ahupua`a contained the resources the #community needed, from fish and salt to fertile land for farming taro or sweet potato, to koa and other trees growing in upslope areas. Using fish ponds, villagers who lived in what is now known as Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park, caught and traded fish for other food and resources. This system still forms the basis for many land and resource management policies throughout the state of Hawai'i today.
