For the past three years, Sandra Dear said she has received notes, emails and phone calls with racial bias since opening her store, The Little Boho Bookshop, in Bayonne, New Jersey. However, on Nov. 20, she received multiple emails sent about 15 minutes apart containing racial slurs, followed by a “racially charged” phone call that threatened her life.
Bayonne police launched an investigation, and arrested and charged a man with bias intimidation and cyber-harassment. In response, patrons lined up for Small Business Saturday to support Dear, who posted about her experience on social media:
“Please know that I saw you, I heard you, was completely moved by you, but mostly I thank you for seeing me,” she wrote to her followers.
