In the 16th Century, the silver mined from Sankt Joachimsthal was minted into coins called Joachimsthalers, or thalers for short, that eventually circulated as far as the New World, as dollars—this is the origin of the word dollar.
In the 18th Century, the new element uranium was discovered, and now it was uranium, not silver, that brought wealth to this village. When uranium is mixed with glass, it glows fluorescent green under ultraviolet light, and cups, accessories, and the like made from uranium glass were prized by the European aristocracy.

16世紀、聖ヨアヒムの谷で採れた銀から鋳造された銀貨ヨアヒムスターラー、略称ターラーは、後にその名が新世界アメリカへまで渡り、ダラー、ドルの語源になった。
18世紀、新元素ウランが発見されると、銀にかわりウランが町に金をもたらした。ウランはガラスに混ぜると、紫外線の光で蛍光グリーンに輝き、ウランガラス製のグラスやアクセサリーなどがヨーロッパの貴族たちにもてはやされた。
