My friend and fixer, Stanislas, had asked just before sunset whether I wanted to go back to the hotel. I was tired, but also wanted to go get lost and wander along the Red Sea. We walked for around an hour along the sand when we came upon a group of people, all standing under moonlight holding their mobile phones in the air. I asked Stanislas what they were doing. He said they were from Somalia and Somaliland, and come to this one spot on the beach in an attempt to catch a signal in neighboring Somalia—they use Somali mobile phone SIM cards they get on the black market. I was astonished…here before me was the symbol of migration today, where the only tenuous link we have to our loved ones during the act of migration is the ubiquitous phones we all have in our purses and pockets. It symbolized the present state of migration and the @outofedenwalk. #djibouti Our photographers have captured the era’s most important stories—from war and human tragedies to scientific breakthroughs and species saved from the brink of extinction.
