For GQ’s December/January issue, we visited the fathers and father figures of six Black victims of police brutality, including Larry Barbine, the father of Rayshard Brooks.

Brooks, a 27-year-old Black man, was shot and killed by a white Atlanta police officer outside a Wendy's in June. Two years before that, he had traveled to Toledo to meet his father for the first time. “It was just a shock to both of us that we looked so much alike,” Barbine recalls. “We just stood there and looked at each other; then we grabbed and hugged each other and we both just wept some tears.”

Swipe right to read Larry Barbine, in his own words, reflect on the violence that forever altered his family’s lives—and what it means to raise a Black man in America. Tap the link in bio to read “Visible Men: Black Fathers Talk About Losing Sons to Police Brutality.”
