The “Year in Pictures” marks the first time the magazine has dedicated an edition to milestones from a single year. This call for justice will be seen as a transformative moment in American history. The Commitment March commemorated the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream" speech, 57 years ago to the day. The crowd was estimated to be over 250,000, drawn from all over the country and representing every ethnicity—reflecting the diverse cross-section of culture that is America. It brought together civil rights leaders and families of Black victims in a peaceful protest against police violence. This image is part of my Day to Night series, in which cityscapes and landscapes are portrayed from a fixed camera angle, capturing fleeting moments of humanity and nature as light passes in front of the lens over the course of a full day. A select group of these images are blended into a single composite. I photographed from an elevated crane in front of the WWII Memorial for approximately 16 hours, recording this epic yet intimate view of the march as the mass of protesters grew toward the Lincoln Memorial and along its Reflecting Pool.
