Meet the 59th Electoral College, America’s most important voters.⠀

Among the 538 people casting the votes that matter most when electing U.S. presidents are a retired social worker from Columbus, Wis., and a 19-year-old college student in Houston.⠀

“I was blown away to be asked,” said Wisconsin Democrat Mary Arnold, 72, a first-time elector pictured in the first photo, who will cast one of her state’s 10 electoral votes for President-elect Joe Biden on Monday when electors nationwide meet in their states. “It never occurred to me that I might be an elector.”⠀

In Texas, Tamon Hamlett, a political-science student at the University of Houston, said he was elected during a July virtual state GOP convention. He had hoped to be elected to the national convention, but fell short and was instead picked as an elector.⠀

“I’ve heard about it my entire life, but now I’m part of it,” said Hamlett, pictured in the second photo, who will vote for President Trump. “I want to be a model for my fellow students.”⠀

The nation’s founders created the Electoral College as a compromise between those who favored a direct popular vote and those who wanted lawmakers to pick presidents. The Constitution doesn’t specify how electors are to be picked, and each state has its own process. Many are elected at state party conventions. In some cases, they are essentially handpicked by party leaders and then confirmed at a special state meeting.⠀

Some electors, like suburban Atlanta resident Rachel Paule, said that the system could use updating. ⠀

“I’m not sure it should be abolished, but the way it is now it doesn’t uphold the spirit of democracy in America,” said Paule, 27, pictured in the third photo, who is president of the Young Democrats organization in Georgia. “It’s an honor to be part of this process, but I don’t think it’s a perfect process.” ⠀
