New York City could see the season’s first large snowfall blanket city streets on Wednesday.

A nor’easter is expected to stretch from North Carolina up through Virginia before advancing north, covering some areas with up to 2 feet of snow, the National Weather Service said. The severe weather could also bring ice accumulations, tree damage, power outages, closures of schools and businesses, and dangerous travel conditions, the service said.

In 1937, when this photo was taken, the city’s forecast was no better: “An unusual series of weather phenomena between 2 and 3 p.m. yesterday brought brilliant sunshine, blinding snow and a loud thunderclap,” we reported. One of our photographers took this photo at the corner of 43rd Street and Broadway around 2:30; an hour later, a photo taken from the same corner showed a sunny winter day.
