Decorated with inlaid mosaics made from shell, red limestone and lapis lazuli, the Standard of Ur illustrates what life was like in Mesopotamia over 4,000 years ago.
The two panels show consecutive events – one depicts the end of a victorious battle, and the other shows a peacetime banquet or ritual celebration afterwards.
The scenes are organised in three levels which can be read from bottom to top – swipe to see the details.
🔎 The Standard of Ur, found at the Sumerian city of Ur, around 2600–2400 BC.
