Photo by @hannahreyesmorales / I visited this kindergarten during nap time in Ulaanbaatar last winter. Everything was quiet, except for a mobile phone playing the Buuvein Duu, a Mongolian lullaby, as an air purifier hummed in the background. The kindergarten is located in one of the most air polluted places in the world—that week, the levels were hazardous. The classrooms are one of the only places where they can breathe purified air as they rest. One of the teachers told me that often children from turbulent homes have a hard time sleeping—and she sings lullabies to those children as a way to soothe them and to encourage more needed sleep.
