Photo by @babaktafreshi / The "great conjunction" of Jupiter and Saturn continues to become more interesting every night. The two appear through this tree (center) near Boston on December 18. Look for them an hour after sunset over the southwest as they almost merge to one point on December 20-21. This the nearest pairing of the solar system’s two largest planets in almost 400 years. Media referred to the event as the “Christmas Star,” inviting comparisons to the biblical Star of Bethlehem, which might have been a similar planetary conjunction (or a comet). The view both with the naked eye and a small telescope is fantastic, with Jupiter moons and Saturn rings in one view. At their closest, the pair will be separated only 1/5th the width of the full moon. Remember this is just a line-of-sight effect. In space, Saturn is more than 730 million kilometers (450 million miles) behind Jupiter. Explore more of the night sky wonders with me @babaktafreshi. #greatconjunction #newmoon #twanight
