It’s going to take a lot of work to clean up this mess. Good policies balance all of the curves that affect humans, including health risks from all causes. We can no longer allow a policy that overweights flattening one curve (hospitalizations) while ignoring all the other curves. We could have solved cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease and fed every child in the country free lunch for the next 20 years if we had more intelligently used the $5 trillion we have spent on the pandemic. It would’ve saved more lives. It would have reversed all of the curves above. We all want to be safe, yet the truth is that we take tons of risks every day that allow us to live fulfilling lives and connect with people in the ways that we believe are worth the risk. My grandmother turns 99 this week. She is pissed that she is not given the right to choose to take the risk of companionship and family over loneliness. She has every right to be! Her take is that she is near the end of her life anyway, and she wants to enjoy what she has left. 🤷‍♂️ I love spending time with people much older than me. They have all the wisdom. Wherever you stand on the response to the virus, please take a minute to be kind to the people who need extra kindness. The curves in this graph are real, and people are suffering. Thank you.
