On Friday mornings, Ciria Santiago and her daughter Katya Ortega get up around 7 a.m. in the two- room apartment in Queens they share with Ciria’s husband and nephew. Ciria had to close down her shoe shop in Queens due to the pandemic, and her husband's work has been slow. Meanwhile, Katya’s school has transitioned to remote learning. Ciria spends Friday mornings helping Katya with her remote classes, which she takes on an iPhone because they don't have a computer. Katya translates the her lessons, given in English, into Spanish, and her mother helps teach her in Spanish, and then Katya translates the work back into English. They work quietly, as Ciria’s nephew, Miguel Angel Rivero Santiago, sleeps on a cot in the living room.

After online classes and breakfast, Ciria and her daughter head out of the house around midday to a food distribution site run by a grassroots group of organizers called Latinos Unidos, who pass out food supply boxes for free every Friday. Since losing her business, Ciria volunteers at several food distribution sites every week. She says she prefers helping out her community to spending the time standing in line, and after volunteering she brings the food back to her family and to other friends and neighbors in need.
