During the Dutch Golden Age, fictive still lifes such as this were prized in Christoffel van den Berghe’s hometown of Middelburg. Here Van den Berghe combined exacting naturalism with an imaginative composition (the different types of flowers in the bouquet, for example, would not have been in bloom at the same time).
