Photo by @hannahreyesmorales / Over the last year, we’ve been exploring what might be the very first love songs that we hear: lullabies. We wanted to find out what bedtime looked and sounded like for families around the world.

On a winter evening in Selenge Province, Mongolia, Oyunchimeg and her two girls get ready for bed. They left their home in the city of Ulaanbaatar, one of the world’s coldest and most air-polluted capitals. Oyunchimeg decided to move to the province, where the air is cleaner, following her daughters becoming ill from the hazardous levels of pollution in the city.

"I use these words to protect my children. They help my children heal," she says of the lullabies that she sang to her girls when they were unwell. Oyunchimeg sings traditional lullabies, but in between refrains she whispers healing words—reshaping a long established song for the present time.

Read—and listen to—our story on lullabies in the December issue of Nat Geo. Follow me @hannahreyesmorales as we journey exploring nighttime rituals around the world. #livinglullabies #Mongolia @insidenatgeo @timstrust
